Getting to know DMI
Digital Media Informatics Laboratory was rooted at the end of 2008 (known as Digital Media Laboratory). Its establishment was aimed at conducting research and development endeavored for accessing the information via picture, motion, emotion and human behaviors instead of accessing via text as previous. The R&D has been executed for the creation of digital contents in order to bridge the market demand (technology and human expert) with the productivity in terms of technology and workforce. The Digital Media Informatics Laboratory has played her crucial role as R&D unit to forward the research output to an industrial sector. In doing that, the cooperation from organizations involved is needed so as to provide sources, prepare for readiness and respond to demand of digital content industry in Thailand and worldwide.
Mission and Framework
Digital Media Informatics Laboratory has strived for achieving the three missions as following:
RDDE
-
- To design the measurement of identity information and Thai wisdom, conduct R&D to create the digital archive for collecting the archives of news, media and body of knowledge belong to Thailand. All archives are accumulated in the format of picture, motion picture and text.
-
- To research and develop the digitalization process for digitalizing and converting all information related to Art & Culture conservation, ethnic groups and Thai history into the digital content. The group of data to be converted has been found in form of motion picture, photo and slides. The development will lead to a design of Algorithm for Digitalization and Algorithm Design for Identification. Virtual and Augmented Reality are included as well.
-
- To research and develop for a design support and other services in that the abstraction from antiques, historical places and ancient fabric will be done. The library arrangement of pattern and design are made for the favor of designer in many fields such as fashion design, furniture design and product design.
-
- To research and develop the real-time adaptive e-learning, authoring tools and e-learning resource center. The development of system, procedure and presentation format are also improved.
-
- To research and develop the sensor technology for managing natural resources and national properties.
-
- To develop the digital presentation formats via various kinds of media such as e-learning and RFID mobile devices. And the data access which can be done via different human interfaces, including website, mobile devices, cell phone and haptic.
HRD
- To provide a short training course, university curriculum related to animation field, game, multimedia and e-learning management system.- To support the animation, game and multimedia contest. The three priority contests to be supported are; AACP Thailand Animation Contest, NSC Contest, and Science Communication Contest.
INFRA and TT
- To transfer technology for constructing, accumulating and presenting the digital information. It could be great help for potential digitalization undertaken by the information owner, and be a beneficial support for media production which can be used as primary data and resources for R&D task and for further use in public.
Current Research & Development Projects
To fulfill the missions, our R&D projects, hence, have been carried out to respond to the operation of Flagship: Digitized Thailand. In the fiscal year 2011, there has been promising projects that are still running on and some just recently have been started. All running projects are totally prepared for readiness in achieving the principal missions of DMI. Those mentioned are;
Academic performance
LearnSquare : Double learning space in IT world (https://www.learnsquare.com)
It refers to the management system of E-learning developed following to the SCORM. Learner can study anywhere, anytime through the multimedia in format of text, photo, sound files and video. User can interact easily with the virtual media as learning in real classes. It additionally supports the advancement of Opensource because it can be run both on Windows and Linux. The software is consisted of many features that are registration module, curriculum management, study tracking, study evaluation, administration tools for designing content of courses and supporting various exam files, also allowing user to change the current interface design easily. The membership module is included for monitoring user and learner.
LearnSquare is also produced by several minor modules for the effectiveness of course building. The modules mentioned are a system for building courses in numerous styles. It is helpful for selecting an appropriate teaching media from many sources. Besides, the repository, online knowledge databank, (https://store.learnsquare.com) are constructed as a data bank for collecting and compiling learning objects by utilizing Information Technology for an education. The repository brings in the data integration which becomes the first step for disseminating data and appropriate application in a wide scale.
Multimedia for e-learning in other languages
Multimedia for e-learning in Malayu language (https://malayu.nectec.or.th/) and Karen language (https://karen.nectec.or.th/).
The content of courses is focused on language used in daily life. It can be used for studying the language and teaching standard Thai literate learner. All contents are checked for correctness with the native speakers and linguists. Learners will be able to study all lessons, do the test, search the vocabulary or video both online and offline or use via their cell phones.
UHF RFID Reader for Steel Industry
UHF RFID Reader has been used in a Steel Industry properly and effectively. It is capable of controlling a receiver of antenna.
RFID Reader which had already been developed can be functioned with any kind of antenna. The function of Watchdog was included for resetting itself automatically if any error occurred. The EPC Gen2 at 27 dBm connected with 9dBi antenna not over than 4 watt EIRP was granted permission to use in Thailand by the National Telecommunications Commission.
Tourism Information Services
https://www.pi-pe.org Pi-Pe is known as an automatic Tourism Information System. Users will be facilitated with travelling guidance modules such as calculating route, rating the most popular tourist attractions and fixing the right time to spend for sightseeing of chosen places and also providing interesting information which is concise, understandable and accurate. The information is actually based on the Central Cultural Center of Ministry of Culture.
Users can select wherever they desire to go for travelling. Of course, they can set up time to start and end it, a starting point for a trip as well. Pi-Pe will process statistical data stored by users, rate the popular places, then put them in order and show the total time spent for a tour on each recommended place. It also gives a good suggestion on the right route to the destination. The travelling plan can be somehow changed along the trip via smart phone or www.pi-pe.org according to users’ choices.
E-Museum Management System
In the E-Museum Management System, RFID technology was applied for a virtual tour inside the National Museum. The Chawsampraya National Museum was chosen to be the first pilot model. The opensource webcam motion detector has been used for property security of the museum.
Cultural Information System
With an objective to appropriately conserve the National Heritage by digitalizing it into a good quality media which could be sustained across time, Cultural Information System has been developed as a supporting system and being capable of managing a plenty of cultural information including text, sound files, photo, motion picture and graphic animation. The system was developed for promotion and encouragement of the study, investigation, research on Thai culture. The historical records were arranged systematically in database. The significant and advantageous information of 77 provinces have been precisely disseminated, transferred and publicized. In doing so, the state-of-the-art Information Technology was utilized to make the information easily, conveniently, and quickly accessible.
The Cultural Information System will be very supportive for cultural information services and tourism industry, especially for a cultural tour. Besides, it could be of help in increasing value added to local goods and products.
