Formerly known as Electro-Optics Laboratory, is one of the NECTEC key technology platforms where we bring in our knowledge and experiences in optical science and engineering, electronics, and computer programming skill to:
- solve technical issues for industrial, environmental, and medical applications
- innovate photonic information processing devices, sub-systems, and systems, and
- disseminate fundamental of photonics and its impact in daily life to general public.
Apart from our expertise in photonics, we also work closely with local universities and other national research centers in biotechnology, nanotechnology, and materials science in order to strengthen our research goals. In addition, we collaborate with local chapters of the Optical Society of America (OSA), the Society for Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineer (SPIE), and the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society (LEOS) as well as the International Commission for Optics (ICO) to persuade next generations to photonics field and to keep local researchers in touch with new discoveries and inventions in optics and photonics.
Our Current Research Topics
Biophotonics
Our main research interest in this topic relates to surface plasmon resonance biosensing systems, Raman spectroscopy, surface enhanced Raman scattering systems, evanescent optical sensing systems, optical fluorescent sensors, near infrared spectrophotometers for food quality assessment, low-cost optical instruments for test kits, and thermal analyzers for deceptive detection systems
Fiber-Optic Components
Here, we focus on the development of active fiber-optic switches, add-drop filters, variable fiber-optic attenuators, digitally controlled polarization mode dispersion compensation structures, MEMS-based optical beam shapers, and micromirror-based polarization rotators.
Optical Design and Optical Thin Film Technology
We specialize in optical thin-film design, fabrication, and analysis. We have state of the art equipment such as a sputtering machine with an in-situ ellipsometer, an electron beam evaporator, and a spectroscopic-ellipsometer. We also focus on ophthalmic lens design and analysis, photochromic films, superhydrophilic films, and self-cleaning films.
Optical Instrumentations and Photonics Appliances
We emphasize on non-contact optical methods such as confocal microscopy for lens thickness measurement, Fourier-Optics for micron object form factor measurement, and infrared technology for heat emission detection in micron-size objects. In addition, we have developed optical fingerprint scanners with low trapezoidal image distortion, and photonic touch switches/keypads for disabled.

Prototyping
We develop several field and industrial prototypes related to optical finger print scanners, photonics keypads, photonic touch switches, low-cost photometers, non-contact lens thickness measurement systems, surface plasmon resonance biosensing systems, thermal analyzers for deceptive detection systems, slider form factor measurement systems for harddisk drive industry, non-intrusive heat emission detection systems, indium tin oxide films, superhydrophilic mirrors, blue mirrors, new designs of ophthalmic lenses.
