After many years in assembly and packaging electronics industry, Thailand, with its own large and fast growing market has developed a very strong base in electronics manufacturing industry, such as home appliances, consumer electronics, IC packaging and assembly, and hard disk drives. Thailand is now ready to move to the high-tech arena. The Thai government has designated the wafer fabrication industry and IC design industry as strategic industries. Worldwide wafer fabrication investors are invited to consider Thailand as a long-term manufacturing center for their worldwide market.
The national commitment is now clear and determined.
In February 2000, the government has committed to support and promote the microelectronics industry in Thailand with the aim of upgrading its present assembly based electronics industry towards upstream higher value added and technology based microelectronics industry.
A working committee composed of the Ministry of Industry; Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment; Board of Investment; Ministry of Finance; Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand; Industrial Finance Coporation of Thailand; Electrical and Electronics Institute, has been formed as a focal point to invite wafer fabrication manufacturers worldwide to consider Thailand as their long- term partners. Announcement of Ministry of Industry on Wafer Fabrication Investment has been made. (See attached document.)
