What is AP-NeGeMo?
AP-NeGeMo (Asia-Pacific Seminar on Next Generation Mobile Communications) is one-day seminar, aiming at presenting, to the extensive Asia-Pacific region, Japan's on-going research and development on mobile communication technologies conducted by the corporate members of YRP R&D Promotion Committee. The seminar has been held annually, co-organized by the Communications Research Laboratory, Independent Administrative Institution and YRP R&D Promotion Committee, since January 2000.
How AP-NeGeMo Started
In May 1999, former Yokosuka Research Park R&D Committee (currently YRP R&D Promotion Committee) sent a delegation to Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. Their mission was to conduct the primary survey on mobile communications R&D activity of other Asian nations by visiting relevant governmental agencies, international institutions, local communication providers, and universities.
The consensus of the delegation's opinion was that "an annual opportunity to meet each other" would be required so that both sides could bilaterally present their R&D activity, and thereby facilitate reciprocal exchange and better understanding for prospective joint research and future standardization of achievements. Moreover, local counterparts expressed keen interest in having an opportunity to learn about Japan's on-going research and development on 3G and 4G mobile communication technologies. Those requests from both sides combined to start AP-NeGeMo.
