Announcement Background Joint Research Research Proposal

The goal of APII is the construction and expansion of each APEC member economy's information infrastructure, interconnection of nation networks and establishment of the regional information superhighway encompassing all the APEC members. (for more information, please see https://www.apii.or.kr and https://www.tc.apii.net)

Background

This project was first proposed at the 14th APEC TEL Meeting under the initiative of a Joint Development of Video Conferencing and Collaboration System over the APII. Having started as a plan to put video conferencing system in place, this project has expanded to become a test-bed project testing interoperability of the APII.

In Singapore Declaration of June 1998, Ministers recognized "individual economies' efforts to construct their own information infrastructures should include an important international dimension" and instructed member economies "to take proactive steps to facilitate the interconnectivity and interoperability of these infrastructures so as to fuel the larger APEC goal of APII", providing their full support for the APII Test-bed project.

Objective
  1. Testing interconnectivity and interoperability of a number of domestic broadband Test-bed currently developed or planned in the near future in the region
  2. Modernizing telecomms networks, expanding the markets, and contributing to building the regional information infrastructure that will be the basis for the sustainable growth of the region
  3. Conducting joint R&D efforts in the application services to be available on the APII such as teleconferencing and telemedicine.
