POTATO

ทุกคนคงรู้จัก POTATO กันดีนะคะ เรามาดูคำนิยามของคำว่า Potato ก่อนนะคะ "a roundish root vegetable with a thin brown or yellowish skin, that is cooked and served in many different ways" มันฝรั่ง เป็นพืชที่มีรากเป็นหัวกลมๆซึ่งมีผิวเป็นสีน้ำตาล หรือสีเหลือง (บางทีก็มีสีแดงนะคะ) มันฝรั่งสามารถนำมาทำอาหารได้หลายรูปแบบ เช่น Boiled potatoes มันฝรั่งต้ม Mashed potatoes มันฝรั่งบด ( ภาพที่ 1 )

Baked potatoes มันฝรั่งอบ บางครั้ง Baked potatoes อาจราดหน้าดัวยเนย (butter) เนยแข็ง (cheese) และถั่วลันเตา (beans) การอบมันนี้เป็นการอบทั้งเปลือก บางทีมันฝรั่งแบบนี้จึงถูกเรียกว่า potato in its jacket (ภาพที่ 2) เหมือนมันฝรั่งใส่เสื้อ jacket ไหมคะ Roast potatoes มันฝรั่งย่าง Potato crisps หรือ Crisps มันฝรั่งทอด หรือที่ชาวอเมริกันเรียกว่า French Files หรือ Chips นั่นเอง

คำว่า POTATO ในสำนวนต่างๆ hot potato หมายถึง something difficult or dangerous to deal with hot potato หมายถึง บางสิ่งบางอย่างที่ยาก หรืออันตรายที่จะเข้าไปยุ่งเกี่ยวด้วย เช่น a political hot potato คือ หัวข้อการเมืองที่เป็นเรื่องร้อนๆ หรือที่สำนวนไทยเรียกว่า 'เผือกร้อนๆ' ตัวอย่างประโยค The topic has become such a political hot potato that anyone wants to touch it. couch potato หมายถึง someone who spends a lot of time sitting and watching television couch potato หมายถึง คนที่ใช้เวลาส่วนมากนั่งดูโทรทัศน์ (couch อ่านว่า' เคาช' =เก้าอี้โซฟา) ตัวอย่างประโยค Movies,television and video games have made couch potato of all the children.
