ABSTRACT -- This research work proposes the development of a PAL video system that can support closed captions (CC) in two languages, i.e. English in channel 1 and Thai in channel 2. The system inserts two bytes of caption codes at 500 Kbit/sec in the 18th scan line of every video frame using a format that is similar to the well known NTSC version. This captioned video signal can be recorded in a normal VHS tape and playback without significantly distorting the caption waveform. To implement the proposed PAL Line 18 CC video system, two electronic hardwares are developed. They are a caption encoder and a Thai-English caption decoder. The encoder is a microcontroller based equipment for inserting caption codes, generated from a personal computer software, into the video signal. To view captions on a normal TV set, a set-top box CC decoder is needed. The decoder developed in this research uses an 8 bit microcontroller together with a font generator specially designed for displaying Thai and English characters in a 32x16 dot format.

บทคัดย่อ -- งานวิจัยนี้นำเสนอการพัฒนาวีดิทัศน์ชนิด PAL ที่ซ่อนคำบรรยายได้ 2 ภาษา คือ ภาษาอังกฤษในช่อง 1 และภาษาไทยในช่อง 2 โดยแทรกรหัสคำบรรยายในเส้นกวาดที่ 18 ของเฟรมภาพ เฟรมละ 2 ไบต์ ด้วยอัตรา 500 กิโลบิตต่อวินาที และมีรูปแบบที่คล้ายกับที่ใช้ใน วีดิทัศน์ชนิด NTSC เราสามารถนำสัญญาณวีดิทัศน์ที่ซ่อนรหัสคำบรรยายนี้ไปบันทึกในแถบวีดิทัศน์ระบบ VHS ที่ใช้กันอยู่ทั่วไปและเล่นกลับได้โดยไม่ทำให้สัญญาณรหัสคำบรรยายมีรูปร่างผิดเพี้ยนจากเดิมมากเกินไป งานวิจัยนี้ยังเสนอการประดิษฐ์อุปกรณ์อิเล็กทรอนิกส์ที่ต้องใช้เพื่อพัฒนาวีดิทัศน์ดังกล่าว ได้แก่ เครื่องเข้ารหัสคำบรรยาย และเครื่องถอดรหัสคำบรรยายภาษาไทย-อังกฤษ เครื่องเข้ารหัสฯ จะใช้ไมโครคอนโทรลเลอร์รับรหัสคำบรรยายที่สร้างขึ้นจากซอฟต์แวร์บนเครื่องคอมพิวเตอร์ส่วนบุคคล แล้วแทรกข้อมูลนั้นลงในสัญญาณวีดิทัศน์ ส่วนเครื่องถอดรหัสฯ จะติดตั้งอยู่กับเครื่องรับโทรทัศน์ธรรมดาเพื่อทำให้สามารถแสดงคำบรรยายที่ซ่อนมาได้ เครื่องถอดรหัสฯ นี้จะใช้ไมโครคอนโทรลเลอร์ชนิด 8 บิตทำงานร่วมกับวงจรกำเนิดรูปแบบตัวพิมพ์ที่ออกแบบให้สามารถแสดงอักขระทั้งไทยและอังกฤษด้วยความละเอียดชนิด 32x16 จุด
